Trained in ceramics and figurative drawing, Julie Williams has created masterful figurative studies that reference the act of working in clay, and the unique relationship between clay and the depiction of the human figure. This series, entitled Process, is constructed of terracotta clay with a surface treatment of oxides and terrasigilatta, an ancient technique of finely-particled slip buffed to a sheen resembling marble or eggshell. This surface recalls figurative sculpture of antiquity, coupled with the flowing soft shapes of the clay, representing the human body. |
