Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter and sculptor. His embrace of ''low art'' is reflected in his use of unorthodox materials and rejection of traditional artistic traditions. He is best known for founding the art movement Art Brut, which he described as originating from unrefined and ''pure and authentic creative impulses.'' His works can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. |
