Friedel Dzubas (1915-1994) was an important American abstract painter. Born in Berlin, Dzubas left Nazi Germany in 1939 to relocate to New York City. During the 1950s, Dzubas experimented with abstract expressionist painting while sharing a studio with Helen Frankenthaler. During the 1960s, Dzubas practiced color field painting and lyrical abstraction. Dzubas work has been shown in more than sixty solo shows around the world. Many of his works have been exhibited in various New York City based galleries and museums such as Anita Shapolsky Gallery, Jacobson Howard Gallery, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Other selected museum collections of Dzubas's work outside of New York City include the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Yale University Art Gallery. Dzubas also has held teacher and lecturer positions at Dartmouth College, the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University.
