Suzan Pitt (1943-2019) was an American painter and animator who created surreal, psychological animated films and paintings. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Pitt studied painting at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, graduating with a BFA in 1965. In the late 1960s, based in New York, Pitt began experimenting with cutout animation using an 8mm camera, completing her first short film in 1970. Her paintings and animated films are in many private collections and museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Ludwig Museum in Germany. Pitt had major exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Stedlijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Venice Biennale. She also designed sets and costumes for two major opera productions in Germany which were the first operas to include animated images for the stage. Pitt's honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000, a Creative Capital Moving Image Award in 2005, a Rockefeller Fellowship, and three production grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. She received a retrospective screening at the Museum of Modern Art in 2017, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at Animafest Zagreb in 2019. |
