Henry MOORE
spacer
Henry Moore (1898-1986), often called the father of modern British sculpture, is best known for his abstract bronze sculptures that are located in various prominent public places. He studied at the Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art but in his work Moore reacted against traditional European sculpture; instead was inspired by ancient sculpture and natural forms. During WWII, Moore was recruited as an official war artist and produced his now famous drawings of people sheltering in the London Underground during the Blitz. After the war, he quickly became one of the most financially successful artists of the world. During the 1970s, his artworks were exhibited in over 40 shows annually. Moore became a Trustee of both the Tate and the National Gallery of Art and his work is part of the permanent collection of numerous museums.
