spacer
Igael Tumarkin (b. 1933) is an Israeli painter, printmaker, and sculptor. Born in Dresden, Germany, Tumarkin's mother and stepfather immigrated with him to Israel when he was two years old. He studied art with sculptor Rudi Lehman in Eid Hod, and in 1955 moved to Berlin to work as a set designer for Bertolt Brecht's Berliner Ensemble. His subsequent printmaking and sculpture exhibit influences from Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Surrealism and Dada. Tumarkin's sculptures incorporate a variety of organic and industrial materials, often using found objects in Expressionist assemblages. He is best known for his Holocaust and Revival memorial in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv (1974-75).
